“BACKWARD” - Jordan Ward (shot by Rae. (@gaptoothshorty)

The first REAL album of 2026 has finally dropped, and it’s a harmonious cyclone of sounds that keeps me coming back for more. If you’re like me, you were highly impressed by Jordan Ward’s debut album “FORWARD”. So it was only right to be eagerly as excited for his sophomore album, “BACKWARD”. (Jordan, love what you did there.)

This 15 track album blends atmospheric R&B sounds with reflective and mindful lyrics. Ward speaks on themes of losing himself, gripping with the harsh reality of making your parent proud, creating reasonable standards for a partner and feeling guilty of creating a life that makes him miss out on important family memories.

Some notable songs that stood out to me: “STRANGER”, “NOISY NEIGHBORS”, “TIL THEN”, and “CHAMPION SOUND”. The way Jordan sings these vulnerable lyrics in an emotional fashion really made me feel and resonate with him. I found myself listening with open ears grasping at how much I could relate to the music. He has a way of letting you in and putting the mirror up to yourself after.

Now don’t get me wrong there are plenty of emotional songs on this project, but there are also fun ones! Ward graces us with three listed features; SAILORR, Smino, and TiaCorine. “SMOKIN POTNA” is the kind of single that is addictive as is melodic. The alluring sounds of the bass and Jordan’s voice create such a beautiful sound. SAILORR only elevates the track with her verse creating a “smoking” duet for the ages. “CUTI” was a complete left on the album. It sounds so out of place but had me dancing and extremely hype. The Smino feature isn’t his strongest in my opinion, but I love the experimentation of flow. (But anytime 2 St.Louis artists get together it’s a SMASH). “CARSEX” is a smooth ride, showcasing a side of Tia I’ve never heard before. The vocals she produces are almost hypnotic, blending her and Ward together was an easy dub.

Overall, I love the album and find it will definitely be in my rotation. I give it 4 out of 5 stars for sure and highly recommend. Give it a listen and let me know what you think in the comments below!
